Frequently asked questions

What kind of projects does SpatialLab build?

Applied research projects in extended reality and applied AI: intelligent virtual agents, immersive and augmented reality experiences for museums and cultural spaces, mixed reality showrooms, and gamified learning platforms. The eight the lab has published are listed on this page, each with its own detail page.

What technologies do the projects use?

Unity and Unity WebGL, Meta Quest 3 headsets and XREAL smart glasses, browser-based augmented reality through 8th Wall and A-Frame, Three.js, and language, speech recognition and speech synthesis models for the conversational agents. Transport for the agent platform runs over WebSockets and ZeroMQ.

Can any of the projects be tried or reused?

Some run directly in a browser: Hatillo Verde is published at neoecosistemashatillo.ucenfotec.ac.cr. The Open Virtual Agent Research Platform (OVARP) is an open-source research platform, including its Unity reference clients for Meta Quest 3 and XREAL, so other laboratories can replicate experiments with it.

Who are the projects built with?

With academic partners, such as Sapienza University of Rome on Emotional Tracking, and with cultural and institutional partners in Costa Rica, such as the Children's Museum (Museo de los Niños) on Mundo Aventura and Juguetes del Parqueo, and CENFOTEC University itself.
