Research

The questions
the lab works on.

Every project, paper, and thesis at SpatialLab grows out of one of these lines. They decide where we put our time and who we build for.

Interaction in Space

Interaction in Space

We investigate how XR and spatial computing can transform physical spaces - from immersive museums and cultural heritage sites to adaptive workplaces and interactive retail environments.

Accessibility

Accessibility

We design XR experiences that are inclusive and adaptive for people with different abilities, including real-time sign language in immersive environments, learning tools for neurodiverse audiences, and cognitive accessibility in XR.

Education

Education

We explore how XR can revolutionize learning and professional training, from virtual STEM labs and immersive medical simulations to AI-driven adaptive learning systems.

Frequently asked questions

What research lines does SpatialLab work on?

Three. Interaction in Space studies how XR and spatial computing transform physical spaces, from museums and heritage sites to adaptive workplaces. Accessibility designs XR that is inclusive and adaptive for people with different abilities, including real-time sign language and cognitive accessibility. Education looks at immersive learning and professional training, from virtual STEM labs to AI-driven adaptive learning. Every project, paper, and thesis at the lab grows out of one of them.

What is WebXR and how does the lab use it?

WebXR is the set of browser standards that lets virtual and augmented reality run inside a web page, with nothing to install. SpatialLab works with browser-based immersive technology — WebXR, WebAR through 8th Wall and A-Frame, and Unity WebGL — because it removes the download barrier: an experience opens from a link or a QR code. That is what let projects like Hatillo Verde and Mundo Aventura reach the public directly.

Can students do research or a thesis with the lab?

Yes. CENFOTEC undergraduate and graduate students join SpatialLab as collaborators and work inside one of the research lines; theses come out of those same lines. Write to spatiallab@ucenfotec.ac.cr to ask about it.

Does SpatialLab collaborate with other universities?

Yes. Emotional Tracking, the lab's adaptive XR framework for real-time emotion estimation on Meta Quest 3, is developed with Sapienza University of Rome. Research collaborations and lab visits are arranged through spatiallab@ucenfotec.ac.cr.
